About Transformer Efficiency

Transformer efficiency is a key performance parameter that indicates how effectively a transformer converts electrical input power into useful output power. Since transformers operate continuously in power systems, even small efficiency improvements can lead to significant energy savings over time.

Unlike rotating machines, transformers have no mechanical losses. Their losses mainly consist of iron (core) losses and copper losses. Iron losses occur due to hysteresis and eddy currents in the core and remain nearly constant. Copper losses depend on load current and vary with load conditions.

Formula Used

Efficiency (η) = Output Power ÷ (Output Power + Total Losses) × 100

Where total losses = iron loss + copper loss.
